Built in 1910 and located in an historic neighborhood in downtown Portland, the Wild Iris Inn offers travelers a comfortable place to spend the night. The inn is conveniently located within walking distance of Portland's many attractions. It was originally built as a two-family house built by Walter Brown, who lived there until 1929. This beautifully restored Victorian-style house retains many of its original features, along with all of its New England charm. It has been operating as a bed and breakfast for the past twelve years. The stairway is one of the inn's most beautiful features with its curved wood. There are decorative tiles surrounding the owner's quarters dining room fireplace with some interesting history.
This eco-friendly bed and breakfast has six beautifully decorated guestrooms, all with private baths. One is a two room suite that can accommodate up to four people. The rooms have been restored with care and furnished comfortably. Guestrooms have flat screen televisions with DVD players.
The owner's quarters is a very spacious entry level apartment with two bedrooms, full bath, spacious kitchen with ceramic tile, dining room with fireplace and spacious living room (both with beautiful hardwood floors). Additional space in the laundry area and unfinished basement. Off street parking and small garden patio area.
A bit about the inn's "green" aspect:
"The Wild Iris Inn is committed to environmental improvements to help protect the Earth while pledging that our green lodging will provide our guests the quality of service they expect and deserve! In our efforts to become a green business, we have been making improvements to better serve you and the Earth. In the past year we have developed an environmental policy that has led to installing energy efficient lighting, an on-demand hot water system, new gas boiler, motion lights and solar-powered garden lights, as well as three different methods for composting food waste, and recycling everything we can in paper, metals and plastics. Our plastic cups are made of biodegradable corn product. We also have a towel & linen reuse program in place, and we incorporated environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry products in our housekeeping department. We try to buy local products, like our Organic Fair Trade coffee from Coffee By Design in Portland, Maine made jams, maple syrup and our homemade granola is from all organic ingredients. As an environmentally friendly business, the Wild Iris Inn will continue to create a green environment. We will find new ways to reduce our impact on the Earth and to educate others that any effort, no matter how small, helps the planet."
